BLUE SKY TROPHY

Our competition on Sunday 27th July at Estepona Golf Club saw over 50 golfers competing for the Blue Sky Management Trophy and winning here was one of our “veterans” George Lee. He beat Josh Jones in to second place, with Kevin Castle third. George was presented with the sponsor’s trophy, a weekend for two at the 5-star La Cala Resort and his prize for also winning the senior division. Josh and Kevin won vouchers to exchange in the pro shop but more importantly, their scores meant they both secured a place in the EPI Iberia Med Golf Masters at Valderrama on Saturday 27th September. Kevin Valentine won the team prize with his playing partner Dave Pinniger and Gary Chant returned to winning ways by taking the “star quality” award. Paul Edinburgh returned the best round of the day with a gross 78 and Roy Azzopardi the prize for the best score on the par 3’s. Nearest the pin winners were Louis Calvente, Derek Nash, John Caruana and Douglas Casciaro. The trophy for the longest drive was awarded to Johann Olivera, who came all the way from Portugal (where he was on holiday) to make sure he recorded another good score to secure his place for Valderrama. He qualified so he definitely deserves the longest drive award! 

This tournament was the final event in our 2007/08 “player of the year” rankings and congratulations go to Tim Rickson who took the winners trophy and the prize of a years membership at Estepona Golf Club (valued at over 1400 euros), kindly donated by Rory and Amanda Leader. The “senior player of the year” result was also concluded and deservedly winning the trophy for his consistent performances was the evergreen Frank Samways.

There has been fierce competition through out the year for places in the EPI Iberia Med Golf Masters with nearly 150 golfers participating. After fourteen events, the qualifiers were finally decided and along with Tim Rickson, making up the ten are Dan Kenyon, Josh Jones, Frank Samways, Johann Olivera, Chris Warren, John McHale, Joe Sanchez, Josh Hunter and Kevin Castle. We must just add that our handicap director, John Hunter, was amongst the ten qualifiers but being the good fellow he is, he relinquished his invitation. Well done John.

We are pleased to announce that in view of the tremendous success of this year’s event, the “player of the year” competition will be in the same format for the season 2008/09, with the first qualifying event being at Montenmedio on Sunday 24th August, where O'Reilly's Ocean Village is the sponsor.
