Cadiz is the most southerly of Andalucia's eight provinces and its capital is the oldest city in the western world.
According to Greek legends, Hercules founded the city, although in actual fact it was the Phoenicians who named it Gadir
in 1100 BC. At one time Cadiz was the capital of Spain and following the discovery of America, was Spain's prime entry
port for ships sailing to and from the new world. The whole province has a seafaring flavour for it fronts on to both
the Mediterranean and Atlantic and this area is very attractive to visiting golfers who want to play in peace and
tranquillity away from the busier Costa del Sol. Just near the city of Cadiz is Puerto de Santa Maria where Columbus's
ship, the Santa Maria, was fitted out before her voyage of discovery to the new world. Here you will find the most
recent edition to the playing list, Club Deportivo Golf El Puerto, which was opened in 2001.
Designed by Manuel Pinero, Golf El Puerto is a very attractive 18 hole golf course, which is suitable for all handicap
players. It is hoped that with maturity, the course will one day be a venue for a professional tournament. The course
does have its own identity and the designer has taken care to create a natural balance with the existing landscape and
it blends in superbly with the local environment. You cannot help but be impressed by the amount of indigenous trees and
the huge extension of water that totals over 33,000 square metres! The course is in excellent condition with a good
mixture of holes and is a good test of golf with the water hazards and numerous bunkers guarding the greens. It is a
delight to play and easily walked although there are buggies available. It is an open course with no blind shots.
On arrival you will find ample parking and a very good clubhouse that has all the necessary shower and changing
facilities. Enjoy a meal in the restaurant and treat yourself to the seafood for which this area is famous. There is a
well-stocked pro shop and all the appropriate practice facilities are available. You can book golf lessons either
individually or with a group. Whatever your requirements, you will be made to feel very welcome by all the staff and
have an enjoyable day.
Although relatively new, this course is well worth a visit and recommended. Why not let Med Golf arrange
your golfing break in this corner of Andalucia which offers superb golf courses and accommodation, in an area steeped
with history and tradition.
