Welcome to our November newsletter and unfortunately the weather has not been too kind recently. One thing we can rely on though is that it will improve!

The SG Hambros trophy at Dehesa Montenmedio on Sunday 15th October was of significant importance as it was the last qualifier for our Masters event at Valderrama on the 5th November. In a very close and exciting finish, the winner was not decided until the very last group were in the clubhouse and eventually coming out on top was Gary Edwards. Runner-up was Pieter Nielen-Groen who missed out by a single point but he did have the satisfaction of winning the senior section. Third place went to Dan Aldridge with Julie Brewer continuing her good form by winning the ladies section.

The Med Golf Masters is the culmination of our 2005/06 golfing season when all competition winners, player of the year, senior player of the year come together to see who will be crowned overall champion. As in previous years, this was held on the championship course at Valderrama, which just a couple of weeks earlier hosted the final European Tour event, the Volvo Masters. Also joining the competition winners were invited corporate guests and representatives of the sponsors. In all, we had 28 golfers taking part and winning on the day to become our new Med Golf Master was Dan Aldridge who just edged Tom Parry in to second place. The corporate trophy winner was Duncan Quigley.
Dan and Duncan were presented with their trophies at the Gala Dinner held in the Valderrama clubhouse, where Director Mike Goodson paid tribute to the Masters sponsors Aage Hempel Marine Electronics, Blue Sky Management and Aloha Bookies and all the monthly competition sponsors who together make it possible to play the season’s finale at Valderrama.
Unfortunately, because of the very bad weather and the course condition due to this, we had to call off our tournament at Estepona on Sunday 12th November and with the help of the sponsors, Ibex Insurance, hope to fit this in at a later date. We apologise for any inconvenience but obviously we had to make an early decision to avoid unnecessary journeys.
We continue our programme at Alcaidesa on Sunday 10th December where the sponsors are the Valmar Pharmacy here in Gibraltar. In all our competitions, the usual crystal trophies will be on offer and that coveted invitation for the Med Golf Masters at Valderrama in November 2007. We are now under way for the 2006/07 player of the year award and the rankings will shortly be updated to give us the latest position.
The winner receives a year’s membership, valued at over 1400 euros, kindly donated and sponsored by Estepona Golf Club and an invitation to the Med Golf Masters at Valderrama in November 2007.

Last month’s winner was George Pedersen who knew the Ryder Cup score was 18.5 to 9.5 for Europe.
We are fortunate at Med Golf to share a very close working relationship with Valderrama and this is evident by allowing us to hold our Masters event there, particularly just a week after the Volvo Masters. As we have said many times, it is only with the help of our sponsors we are able to do this and again we have no hesitation in thanking all our competition sponsors, along with our main sponsors Aage Hempel Marine Electronics, Blue Sky Management and Aloha Bookies. I am sure if you ask any one of our 28 competitors taking part, they would share our enthusiasm on what is an unforgettable day.
We have all seen Valderrama with enormous crowds for the Ryder Cup, World Championship and Volvo Masters but you can only appreciate it’s true splendour when you have an event like our’s and can walk the fairways. You can sit by the 17th green and see the fear on the player’s faces when they try to avoid the water. There are many stories to tell on this hole but none were funnier than Gary Edwards’s "Barns Wallis" shot!
Such an event cannot be successful without the staff behind it and we must thank Johnathan Goodson for putting it all together and his team of John, Mike, Malcolm and David. They worked tirelessly to make sure everyone had a most enjoyable day.
