We completed our 2006/07 tournament “season” at Estepona on Sunday 29th July and start the 2007/08 campaign at Sherry Golf Club during our Bank Holiday weekend away at Costa Ballena. Further details on a few holiday ideas, new “player of the year” format and superb tournament prizes are featured later in this e-news but it got us thinking about what excellent deals and facilities we can offer both our members and visiting golfers.

This event saw the conclusion of the 2006/07 tournament “season” and Paul completes the line up for the Med Golf Masters at Valderrama on Sunday 11th November where he joins previous qualifiers George Desoisa, Steve Parry, Vinny Samways, John McHale, Chris Warren, James O’Docherty, John Dale, Louis Calvente and Frank Samways.

Introducing Med Golf’s fantastic new tournament prize!
Working with our sponsors, for the new “season” from 1st August 2007 to 31st July 2008, we are pleased to announce each of our tournament winners will now receive a fantastic prize of a weekend for two in one of the super hotels on offer from Med Golf Holidays. After a good performance at Estepona, congratulations to John McHale for winning our 2006/07 “Player of the Year” title, narrowly beating our long time leader Steve Parry in to second place. Winning the “seniors” title was the experienced Frank Samways, who showed his consistency throughout the year and Frank now takes his place at Valderrama for the Med Golf Masters.

Our competition at Sherry Golf club on Sunday 26th August is the first event in the 2007/08 “player of the year” rankings and the overall winner will receive a year’s free membership at Estepona Golf Club, which once again has been kindly donated by Rory and Amanda Leader. There is some further good news for those who participate regularly and consistently in our competitions, as they will now have a very good chance of playing in our prestigious finale at Valderrama.
We are happy to confirm our rankings format will still be calculated on an average of the five best scores and based on this, the “Top 10” in the rankings at the 31st July 2008 will all automatically receive an invitation to our Masters event, which will be staged late summer 2008 at Valderrama. Ranking scores will be published from the very first event but you must have played at least five Med Golf competitions to eventually qualify for one of the top ten places.
We believe this will reward event participation and consistency over the year.

Last months winner was Ray Couchman, who knew the year was 1999 when Jean Van De Velde had his Carnoustie disaster.
Congratulations to La Cala for making the Guinness Book of Records for the highest number of golfers to play in a single competition in one day. Med Golf was proud to be part of it and entered four teams, although we didn’t get anywhere near the prizes. Our best team of three had a combined Stableford score in excess of 100 points and came 85th on the day! We must congratulate the organisers and La Cala Resort itself for putting on such a wonderful event, which hopefully raised a lot of money for UNICEF. Well done to everyone concerned and your organisation on the day was superb bearing in mind the number of players involved.
The Gibraltar Government has recently given every sports organisation in Gibraltar a massive boost by providing excellent new outdoor facilities, as well as a brand new sports hall. These are located adjacent to the Victoria Stadium and hopefully will encourage more people to participate in the sport of their choice. Golf has been included within an area that has five practice nets, bunker facilities and a 9-hole putting area, which is a fabulous facility. Under the guidance of the Gibraltar Golf Union, this facility is available for practice purposes and there is a qualified coach on hand if individual lessons are required. If anyone is interested in making use of this practice area, please let us know by e-mailing David at ds@medgolf.gi . We will then pass your name on to GGU President Geoff Holt, who will let you have all the relevant details. Hopefully, there will be a budding Tiger Woods out there!
Finally, we are very excited about our new tournament prize and rankings format for the coming season and strongly believe this will prove a winner. It will benefit those who regularly participate in our tournaments and a prize of a weekend for two and the chance to play Valderrama is, we believe, just reward for everyone’s support.
