The competition at Estepona on Sunday 29th July will determine our “player of the year” for 2006/07 so the nerves will be jangling that day! The player of the year winner receives a year’s membership, valued at over 1400 euros, which is kindly donated and sponsored by Estepona Golf club, as well as an invitation to the Med Golf Masters on Sunday 11th November.
It is going to be very close and here are the latest standings with the average points score, based on their best 5 scores during the competition season: -

Last month’s winner was Steve Gilbert who knew that Tony Jacklin won the US Open in 1970.
2007 seems to be a good year for celebrating special birthdays and after John Hunter’s 40th we celebrated the 60th birthday at the end of June with the “old man” of the Med Golf team, Dave Stimson. Our “property, insurance and press man” was 60 on the 27th June, although we all agree he doesn’t look it. He celebrated by having a “We can’t believe he is 60” dinner party for all his friends and it was nice to see a table of three in the corner enjoying themselves so much! Seriously, he had a lovely party with all his golfing mates and their partners, which went on to the early hours. David now gets free use of the local public swimming pool, half cost bus fares and free membership to the Senior Citizens Social Club, so he might take his lovely wife Gloria out a bit more now. Rumour has it our tournament director Mick Goodson will also be 60 in January next year, so you never know we may have something else to look forward to there. We understand his wife Jean is very keen to do something special, so you can rest assured we will do everything we can to prise open his wallet on that day.
Unfortunately, the Gibraltar Golf team were not able to bring home any medals from the recent Small Island Games in Rhodes but they did perform admirably against opposition where some seem to be nearer the professional ranks rather than pure amateurs, which the games were originally designed for. Having been involved since 1997 when golf was first included in the Jersey games, the standard has improved considerably over the years with more and more nations participating and sponsors also playing a big part. That is a little sad to see and it is credit to all involved with the Gibraltar Golf Union we are able to send a true, representative team and long may that continue. On a happier note, we must congratulate Med Golf member Paul Edinburgh, who finished a respectable 28th from a field of 72 in the individual event, which was a superb achievement. Well done Paul and we will see you at our next competition in Estepona.
