With summer nearly over, our attention turns to a new golfing season, where the Costa del Sol will continue to attract visitors and receive its fair share of business in what is considered the busy time of year. Med Golf’s August Bank Holiday tournament at the Sherry Golf complex saw Andy Ferguson win the EPI Gibraltar Trophy and with it a fabulous weekend for two at the magnificent 5-star Montecastillio Golf and Spa Resort near Jerez. Andy narrowly beat Gary Chant in to second place, with John McHale coming third.
Prime Trust Corporation Trophy
Our competition at San Roque on Sunday 16th September saw the consistent Steve Parry win the Prime Trust Corporation Trophy and along with it a weekend for two at the superb 5-star La Cala Resort. Young Josh Jones was second and Chris Warren third.
Playing with our sponsor Darren McComb was special guest Jose-Maria Canizares, the former Spanish Ryder Cup star, who still regularly competes on the USPGA and European Senior tours. Jose enjoyed his relaxed day out with Darren and must have been impressed with his other playing partners, Wilfred Perez and Dennis Beltran, who are more used to a larger ball and a cricket bat in their hand. He was too much of a gentleman to say whether their round included any cover drives!

We are extremely delighted with the response we have received from members about our new tournament prize and this is proving a winner along with the new rankings format.
We are in the process of looking at the tournament schedule for 2008 and would welcome any input or feedback on which courses you prefer or anything you think we could improve. We try and move around the courses but must always bear in mind every tournament has to be cost effective for all concerned.

What a start there has been to our new rankings season, with consistency being the key word and names from 2006/07 such as Steve Parry, Chris Warren and Frank Samways already featuring in the early stages. It is very early days in the rankings and until 5 events have been played, a true reflection of the possible “top ten” qualifiers for the Med Golf Masters at Valderrama in September 2008 will not emerge. The end of September sees the return of our friends the “Plumb lads” to Gibraltar and under the guidance of Johnathan, we are pleased Med Golf has once again been entrusted to make all their golfing arrangements and select a representative team to challenge them. After a couple of practice rounds the “serious” business starts at Alcaidesa on the 29th, with the Quaich Cup up for grabs, which is a new trophy kindly donated by the Gibraltar Arms in Gibraltar. Sunday 30th sees the competition move to Dona Julia where the original Friendship Trophy is on offer and Gibraltar will be looking to retain the trophy they won last year, eight matches to six.
The “Plumb lads” are from Bicester in the UK and have been coming to Gibraltar since 1986, when they refurbished the Gala Casino. Through the PSA, Rock Golf and now Med Golf, friendships have been formed, so much so this is the twentieth continuous year they have made the trip to play golf here.
We welcome all fourteen players and feel sure, although the golf will be competitive; the spirit (both in the mind and liquid form) will be maintained!
This visit follows on from last weekend when we played the Straits Challenge Cup at Estepona and again, to make sure this annual event continues, Med Golf were asked to make all the arrangements and put out a representative team. For the past few years, serving and retired military personnel from the USA base at Rota, near Jerez issue a challenge to compete against them Ryder Cup style. This involves twenty four golfers representing each team and after a great day of golf, the Med Golf select team overcame the Americans eighteen points to six.
At Med Golf we are pleased to help carry on these traditions and support the friendships that have been made over the years. To us these friendships are the real essence of the game and look forward to the challenges in 2008!
Our spy in the sky, the much travelled “Black Crow”, is back after his migration and looking for targets. Our own Johnathan surprisingly won his match but unfortunately the “Black Crow” reported he overheard him say when asked how his opponent was playing, “He was hitting the woods great but had a terrible time getting out of them!”
Be careful – will you be his next target?
