Med Golf Masters

Sunday 11th November saw the climax of our 2006/07 season with the prestigious Med Golf Masters taking place at Valderrama. All our tournament winners along with corporate guests, all had a great day on the fabulous golf course and a great evening at the gala dinner in the club house resturant.

The sponsors of the 2007 event were EPI Gibraltar, Antico Mulino D'Oro, Blue Sky Property Management of Sotogrande and O’Reilly’s Irish Bar Ocean Village. We do appreciate their continued support and also thank all of our monthly competition sponsors who make this event possible.

Aage Hempel International Trophy

Estepona Golf was the venue for the Med Golf competition on Sunday 25th November sponsored by Aage Hempel International.

Following rain on Saturday the tournament day was bright and sunny, ideal weather conditions for golf.

Leading the way on the day was John McHale with an outstanding score of 38 points, John collected the sponsors’s trophy as well as a prize of a weekend for two at the 3 golf course La Cala Resort near Fuengirola.

Tim Mitchell was in second place and Roy Azopardi taking third, both golfers winning prize vouchers from the Estepona pro shop. Roy will need a bigger trophy cabinet as he also won the best gross score on the par 3’s, nearest the pin on the 16th hole, overall best gross score and the top senior prize! Other nearest the pin winners were Paul Singleton, Josh Hunter and George Lee. Chris and Peter Warren won the top team prize with a combined score of 68.

Other crystal trophies were awarded to Steve Parry with the longest drive on the 6th hole. The “top lady” on the day was Julie Brewer, and Claudo D’Ascenzi took the “star quality” prize.

EPI Iberia Trophy

Med Golfers enjoyed a super day on the Alcaidesa Links Course on Sunday the 16th December playing for the EPI Iberia Trophy.

It was a cold and crisp start for 60 golfers but the calm conditions resulted in some high scoring with Jeff Richardson (originally from Scotland) best suited to the cold morning start and posting a winning score of 44 points. Jeff collected the sponsor’s crystal trophy and a weekend for two at the 5 star Montecastillo Golf Hotel and Spa in Jerez, arranged by Med Golf Holidays

Jeff also won the nearest the pin on the 6th hole nearest the pin in two on the 4th, he also won the top senior player.

Runner up on the day was Simon Young and next best score went to Josh Jones. Josh also helped his farther Kevin take the top team prize on the day with a great combined score of 77 points.

Other winners on the day included Billy Curbishley, Kate Davies, Johann Olivera and John McHale, all winning nearest the pin prizes. The best gross score on the day with a 76 shots was John Hunter, John also won the best gross score on the par 3’s playing them to par, all the practice must be paying off!

Other trophy winners on the day were, Longest Drive to Tim Rickson, the Top Lady Trophy went to Julie Brewer and the Star Quality Trophy to Claudio D’Ascenzi.

Sunday 20th January – Atalaya Golf Club, Old Course

Come & play for The Famous Grouse Trophy, the winner receiving the crystal trophy as well as the superb prize of a weekend for two at the 5-star La Cala Resort. Last month’s winner was Paul Neale who knew that in the recent Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, the name the young 18 year old Irish golfer who came third and therefore secured his PGA tour card in only his second professional event was Rory Mcllroy.

The Med Golf “black crow”, our spy in the sky, has been busy and recently spotted two Med Golf members in action.

John Dale was seen at Valderrama hitting a super iron shot in to a par 3 and getting his first ever hole in one. This is a great feat on any course, however at Valderrama it seemed even sweeter. The only problem was that it was on the par 3 course, just ahead of teeing off on the Championship Course in the Med Golf Masters. Congratulations John.

In our last competition at Alcaidesa, the "black crow" was witness to Jeff Richardson drinking a bottle of water on the 1st tee before he went out to play. This must be a first for Jeff or any Scotsman, especially bearing in mind the cold conditions and the festive season, however this could explain his winning score!
