Sunday 27th April
Cruz & Co. Trophy – Almenara

We had over 60 golfers contesting the Cruz & Co. trophy and it was nice to see one of our long standing members Joe Sanchez winning here. Joe was followed by David Liu and Kevin Castle who were second and third respectively. Joe not only won the sponsor’s crystal trophy but also a weekend for two at the superb 5-star Montecastillo Golf and Spa hotel arranged by Med Golf holidays, with David and Kevin receiving vouchers to be exchanged in the pro shop. It was one of those days for Joe, as not only did he win the major prize but also the team prize with his brother Nicky, the prize for the day’s best gross round and his score made sure he returned to the top ten in our rankings! Julie Brewer was the top lady, Frank Samways the top senior, Louis Posso was the “star quality” player and the other prize winners on the day were young Dan Kenyon, Douglas Casciaro and Matt Charlesworth.

Gibraltar Gala Casino Trophy - Montecastillo

The competition at Montecastillo was part of our Spring Bank holiday weekend and we had fifty golfers competing for the Gibraltar Gala Casino trophy on the championship course. With a really superb round of 73, Tim Rickson took the sponsor’s crystal trophy and with it a weekend for two at the magnificent 5-star resort at La Cala. Tim has been playing some excellent golf recently and with his partner Keith Mack he also took the team prize. Second place went to Neville Dennett, closely followed by Chris Warren who both received vouchers to exchange in the pro shop. There was some consolation for Chris as he was the day’s top senior and won a nearest the pin prize as well. Julie Brewer added to her collection by winning the ladies section and Martyn Brown got back amongst the trophies by taking the “star quality” award. Other prize winners on the day were Douglas Casciaro, Gary Pigot and Nicky Sanchez.    

Andy’s Captains Day – Estepona 10th May

Thanks to the “full house” of 80 golfers who joined me for my Captain’s day at Estepona. Congratulations to the winners Carlos, Pepe, Jesus and Paco who won the Texas Scramble with a net score of 60.2 Special thanks to Rory, Amanda and all their staff for making this a very special day and to Pete who once again provided us with a superb BBQ.

Estepona is looking better and better and is well worth a visit. Book your tee times with Med Golf now on the coasts friendliest course.

21st Volvo Masters at Valderrama
Thursday 30th October to Sunday 2nd November

It hardly seems 6 months have passed since the 20th anniversary Volvo Masters was held at Valderrama and the planning for the 21st is well underway. It is once again the climax to the European tour and will be held at Valderrama from the 30th October to the 2nd November. Reigning champion Justin Rose has already confirmed he will be defending his title and the sponsors are hopeful all the European Ryder Cup team will play. The prize fund this year has increased to a staggering 4.25 million euros, with the champions share going to 708,000 euros, making him the first million dollar man in the history of the event.

Chris Warren has taken over from Josh Jones at the top and Roy Azzopardi is back in the standings where he is joined by young Josh Hunter. Remember, after our final event at Estepona on Sunday 27th July, the overall leader will become our “player of the year” and receive a year’s free membership at Estepona Golf Club valued at over 1400 euros, which has kindly been donated by Rory and Amanda Leader. The “top ten” in our rankings will all receive an invitation to play in the EPI Iberia Med Golf Masters at Valderrama on Saturday 27th September.

To reiterate the rules to qualify, any player must have played at least five Med Golf tournaments by the end of July and the five best recorded scores are taken to form the average. In the event of a tie after the final qualifying event, the player with the lowest handicap will win the “player of the year” title and the player(s) with the lowest handicap will qualify for the EPI Med Golf Masters at Valderrama. Our tournament referee Mike Goodson’s decision will be final.

Last month’s winner was David Moore who knew Gregory Bourdy, David Howell and Alistair Forsyth contested the play-off in the Portugese Open.

As you can imagine, we are starting to get excited about the final outcome for the player of the year positions and who the “top ten” qualifiers will be so we can hand out those coveted invitations to play in the EPI Iberia Med Golf Masters at Valderrama on Saturday 27th September. After every tournament we immediately update the rankings on the web site so everybody can see where they are. I always look for my position and having moved up to 40th I am making a late surge, although I am still trailing behind my son who won’t let me forget it! In total we have some 106 players competing for 10 spaces, so the next four events in June and July at Marbella Golf Club, El Chaparral, Santana and Estepona are bound to be fiercely competitive.  There are some players who are just one or two competitions away from qualification and making the top ten, so when we add them to the mix, expect a few changes on the leader board before now and the final event on Sunday 27th July. 

The “black crow” decided to join us on our Spring Bank holiday weekend event at Montecastillo and on hearing movement in tournament referee Mike Goodson’s hotel room in the early hours of Sunday morning, he decided to investigate. At Med Golf we pride ourselves on being ready early for our competitions to ensure everything is in place before the golfers arrive. On this particular day, true to our word Mike was up with the lark, showered, shaved, manicured and wearing his freshly ironed tournament shirt ready for action to start the Gibraltar Casino trophy. Noticing there was no movement from his son Johnathan, Mike rang his room and enquired if he was awake? “I am now” he exclaimed “but it is only 5.30am”. With that Mike undressed, got back in to bed and repeated the whole process some 2 hours later. Well done Mike – we admire your dedication to duty!
