Sunday 27th July – Blue Sky Management (Sotogrande) Trophy
- Estepona Golf Club

Blue Sky Trophy

George Lee receiving his trophy from Blue Sky directors Michael and Andy Griffin.

Med Golf “veteran” George Lee was the winner of the Blue Sky Management (Sotogrande) Trophy at Estepona on Sunday 27th July, closely followed by young Josh Jones and Kevin Castle, who were second and third respectively. As well as the sponsor’s crystal trophy, George won a weekend for two at the 5-star La Cala resort, with Josh and Kevin winning vouchers to exchange in the pro shop. George also won the senior prize, with Kevin Valentine and Dave Pinniger taking the team prize. Gary Chant got back to winning ways by taking the “star quality” award and the days other prize winners were Paul Edinburgh, Roy Azzopardi, John Caruana, Derek Nash, Louis Calvente and Douglas Casciaro.

Sunday 24th August – The O’Reillys Ocean Village Trophy – Montenmedio

The O’Reillys Ocean Village Trophy was the first event in our 2008/09 player of the year competition and last year’s winner Tim Rickson got off to a fast start in this campaign when he came out on top at Montenmedio. In second place was Kevin Valentine and Joe Sanchez was third. With a superb round of 74, Tim took the sponsor’s crystal trophy and the weekend for two at the La Cala resort, with Kevin and Joe winning vouchers to spend in the pro shop. John Caruana won the senior division and also the top team prize with playing partner Douglas Casciaro. The “star quality” award went to Les Housely, with the day’s other prize winners being John McHale, Josh Hunter and Jeff Richardson.

World Blind Golf Championship

Med Golf member Paul Appleyard has recently returned from Northern Ireland where he competed in the World Blind Championships held at Belvoir Park Golf Club. Paul finished a very creditable joint third, losing out by a mere two shots in a very close contest. Unfortunately, very heavy rain curtailed the final round but Paul can be very proud of his achievement when you consider he called a penalty on himself after his ball moved on the green as he was addressing the ball.

Well done Paul from all of us at Med Golf.

Player of the year

Congratulations to Tim Rickson who was crowned our player of the year after the last qualifying event at Estepona. Tim won the prize of a year’s membership at Estepona Golf Club, valued at over 1400 euros, which was kindly donated by Rory and Amanda Leader, the Estepona Golf owners.

We must also say well done to the sprightly Frank Samways who was our senior player of the year.

In the race for those ten invitations for Valderrama, there were a few final twists and turns at the very end but joining Tim on Saturday 27th September are Dan Kenyon, Josh Jones, Frank Samways, Johann Olivera, Chris Warren, John McHale, Joe Sanchez, Josh Hunter and Kevin Castle.

We should just mention our handicap director, John Hunter, was amongst the qualifiers but being the good fellow he is, relinquished his invitation. Well done John. Johann Olivera was on holiday in Portugal but to make sure he qualified with another good score, he came all the way back to play in the competition. He will be at Valderrama so it was well worth the drive!

We are pleased to say that due to the tremendous success of this year’s event, the “player of the year” competition will be in the same format for our “season” 2008/09 and the O’Reilly’s Ocean Village Trophy was the start of the new campaign. The top ten Med Golf members in the “player of the year” rankings at the 31st July 2009 will be invited to play in the Med Golf Masters at Valderrama in late summer 2009. To qualify, members must have played in at least five qualifying competitions and rankings are based on the average of the best five scores recorded during the season. The overall winner will also receive a year’s free membership to Estepona Golf Club, valued at over 1400 Euros and we are grateful to Rory and Amanda Leader for their continued support.

Good luck to everyone for 2008/09!

What a golfing month we have in store for September and at the end of it Johnathan will probably be a nervous wreck!

The golf starts on the 6th September when Med Golf put together a team to play the Americans from the Rota base in our own version of the Ryder Cup at the lovely complex in Costa Ballena. Following on from this, the next weekend we have our competition for the Barclays Wealth Trophy at San Roque on September 14th. Then we see the return of the “Plumb” lads from the UK and they will be with us from the 17th until the 23rd, with the challenge against the Med Golf team for the Quaich Cup arranged for Saturday 20th and the Friendship Cup is on Sunday 21st. They are playing various courses in between as well. That could be a very long week bearing in mind it is Ryder Cup weekend and their ability with alcohol! We then have our big one- the EPI Iberia Med Golf Masters on Saturday 27th September at Valderrama, where the event concludes with the Presentation Dinner in the club house after the days play.

All this will take some organising but we have every confidence in you Johnathan although we bet you will need a well earned rest in October!

  black crow

We are a little bit disappointed with the “Black Crow” as he has nothing major to report this month. He was seen flying about on our bank holiday weekend at Chiclana and the competition at Montenemedio, but it seems he was enjoying himself too much with the management team to make a report!

Happy golfing and remember we are your playing partners!
