Sunday 14th September – The Barclays Wealth Trophy – San Roque

Blue Sky Trophy

Tim Rickson from Barclays Wealth presenting the trophy to winner Simon Young

We welcomed over 60 golfers to the new course at San Roque and winning the Barclays Wealth Trophy was Simon Young, followed by Nicky Sanchez and George Desoisa who were second and third respectively. Simon won the sponsor's crystal trophy and a weekend for two at the 5-star La Cala Hotel and Golf Resort. It was a good day all round for him, as with his father Cambell he also won the team prize and had the best aggregate score on the par 3's. Nicky and George received vouchers to be exchanged in the pro shop for their top three finishes. The senior prize was won by Bill Curbishley and one of our newer members, Sally Rickson, won the ladies section as well as our star quality award. Other prize winners on the day were Gary Pigot, John Caruana and Peter Rees.

EPI IBERIA MED GOLF MASTERS

Qualifiers, corporate and sponsor's guests for the EPI Iberia Med Golf Masters

What a fantastic day we had at Valderrama where we welcomed our top ten in the rankings for the season 2007/08, together with corporate and sponsor's guests to the EPI Iberia Med Golf Masters. Even the wet conditions at the start couldn't dampen our spirits and it was so nice to finish the day's play in sunshine. In all we had our ten qualifiers who were contesting the main event and a further ten players representing the sponsors and corporate guests, who were playing for their own trophy. After an excellent round, coming out on top was John McHale who was crowned the new EPI Iberia Med Golf Masters champion. Winning the corporate trophy was Claudio D'Ascenzi who was ecstatic with his win in front of his family and friends. Well done to John and Claudio, along with everyone else involved for making this such a special event. The day was rounded off with the Presentation Dinner in the Valderrama club house where the players were joined by their wives and girlfriends.

Simon Young from EPI Iberia Ltd with our winners Claudio D'Ascensi and John McHale

Our sincere thanks go to Simon Young representing sponsors EPI Iberia Ltd., who made the presentations and for his company's commitment during the year to the Med Golf Masters.

Ryder Cup namesake Samuel Ryder was a famous businessman. What was his business?

Answers please to ds@medgolf.gi by Monday 20th October.

Last month's winner was John McHale who knew SG Hambros are our sponsors at Montenmedio on the 12th October.

And finally...

In the last e-news I mentioned how busy September was going to be for us and I have probably played more golf in a month than I usually do in a year!

It started on the 6th September at Costa Ballena with Med Golf's own version of the Ryder Cup against the American base from Rota . Just like the European team we suffered defeat so we know how the players are feeling. Perhaps our captain got his pairings wrong as well? Following on from this, the next weekend we had our competition for the Barclays Wealth Trophy at San Roque. Our group from "Plumb International" were here from the 17th until the 23rd , challenging the Med Golf team for the Quaich Cup, which is sponsored by the Gibraltar Arms, on Saturday 20th and the Friendship Cup on Sunday 21st . At long last I have experienced victory as we won the pairs competition for the Quaich Cup four matches to three, although I have to say my partner and I didn't contribute a point. I was "rested" for the Friendship Cup, the individual event on the Sunday and needless to say we won twelve matches to two without me! We then had the EPI Iberia Med Golf Masters on Saturday 27th September at Valderrama, followed by the Presentation Dinner in the club house after the days play.

We must put on record our thanks to Johnathan who arranged this successful programme. Well done Johnathan, it was a mighty effort appreciated by everyone involved in all of these events.

In the school holidays I managed to sneak a day off during the week along with "our man" David and we played the old course at San Roque with my son Matthew and nephew Joshua, who was a Med Golf Masters qualifier. Being the "young dudes" they are and full of confidence, they challenged the "old men". The "black crow" is pleased to report the "young dudes" were last seen crying in to their coca cola's after being seriously beaten. It just proves form is temporary and class is permanent. Let us know when you want to challenge the adults again boys?

Happy golfing and remember we are your playing partners!
