Sotogrande was Robert Trent Jones' first course design in Europe and opened in 1964. It is still
considered to be in the top ten of Europe's finest and forms part of the "Golden Triangle" with
Valderrama and San Roque.
As for the course itself, it is located in a perfectly natural surrounding and this very special
design has matured beautifully over the years. The mature trees and natural vegetation that follow
the wide luscious fairways enhance the beauty, which make this a pleasure to play. The holes are
varied with a good mixture of varying lengths and degrees of difficulty particularly where the water
starts to encroach on to the course. This is particularly noticeable towards the end of the round and
it has the ability to ruin a good card. There are strategically placed bunkers, water hazards and the
fast greens do not make it any easier. The course is challenging for all standards and Sotogrande has
hosted various championships in the past. Another feature is the wind that has the habit of picking up
during the round that gives the golfer no respite. Sotogrande is a club with extremely high standards
where golf naturally comes first. You must ensure you have your handicap certificate with you with some
form of identification. It is a members course with certain times for visitors and you should let
Med Golf arrange your tee time
to avoid disappointment. The clubhouse has recently been modernised and looks out over the first tee
and eighteenth green.
As the course has matured so have the surroundings. There are many new houses reaching to the fairways
but none encroach making this a peaceful and tranquil area. Sotogrande itself has developed enormously
over the years and is now considered a prestigious part of the world to reside.
On arrival you will find ample parking, clubhouse and well-stocked pro shop. There are good changing
facilities and although the course can be easily walked, there are buggies on offer. The clubhouse also
provides bar and snack facilities as well as a restaurant. There is practice area and group or individual
tuition if required.
Sotogrande is an excellent course and a pleasure to play.
