One of the highlights of this course is the incredible use of the natural terrain that was on offer during the building of the course. Exposed natural stone, large trees, lakes and historic walls all add to the unique character of the round. The 5th hole at Pestana Gramacho in the Western Algarve is considered by many to be a hidden gem, and is the perfect showcase for Pestana’s undulating fairways and slick greens. A dramatic driving hole, featuring an uphill fairway and a significant dogleg to the right. Vale da Pinta This course hosted European Seniors Tour Qualifying eight times and is a great golfing challenge for players of all levels. The course is highly playable and intelligent design by Ronald Fream has resulted in a superb experience. Strategic bunkering has been deployed perfectly to protect the course and water hazards add another element of danger for your scorecard. The terrain is an absolute joy on the eye and includes some wonderful trees, including an olive tree that is over 1200 years old! The 13th hole is a real stand-out and a potential card-wrecker. A tight tee-shot requiring the avoidance of a large water hazard and many bunkers leaves a short approach to a very well-protected green. Greenside bunkers await errant wedges. The course places great importance on accurate shot making- tight fairways, doglegs, and many well-placed hazards leave little margin for error. Perhaps the finest example of this can be found on the par 5 4th hole, measuring at 560 yards. The hole certainly provides a stern test of the driver, with a long and accurate drive towards a marker post, made tougher by the out of bounds on the left, and rough on the right. Further caution is required on the approach, with an ever-narrowing fairway and a well-protected, undulating green making for a tough par. Martin Hawtree was responsible for creating the layout, using 9 holes of the old Laguna course, and he has been successful in producing a beautiful course that strikes the perfect balance of testing the better golfers whilst remaining manageable for the average visitor. The short 6th is the highlight of the Millennium, where the target will shrink before your eyes as you stare over the imposing water that guards the front of the green. This hole typifies how enjoyable the Millennium is, making it a sure fire hit for your golf holiday in Vilamoura. Pinhal Golf Course The predominant character of the course comes as a result of the rolling landscape that is heavily populated by Umbrella and Atlantic Pines. These trees are frequently obstacles to the visiting golfer, while there are also streams and a lake that can be decidedly tricky. To keep up with the advancements in golf technology, the Pinhal recently lengthened a number of holes, and the resultant 6,947 yards is a genuine pleasure to play during a golf escape in the popular resort town. Old Course, Vilamoura Measuring 6,839 yards, the Old is by no means the longest by modern standards, but it has certainly stood the test of time. Frank Pennink's original design has seen minor alterations, particularly in 1996 when a brand new clubhouse was also unveiled, but the course is predominantly the same as it was in its early days. Victoria Course, Vilamoura The course was designed by Arnold Palmer's highly regarded golf architecture firm, and was recently selected to host the World Cup of Golf, one of the four high profile World Golf Championship Events. The Victoria can be stretched to 7,105 from the tips, and is dotted with a number of large man-made lakes which are a real threat, and create a beautiful contrast with the crystal white swathes of sand that guard the greens. This is a formidable test that can humble even the most skilled player, and is an essential part of any trip to Vilamoura for the golfing aficionado. Arnold Palmer's playing style is clear for all to see in the final two holes on The Victoria Course. The 17th is a long par-5 stretching well close to 600 yards from the back tees with water in play off the tee and on the approach to the green. With a favourable wind, you can reach this in two but you'll be faced with a high number if you fall short of the green. The 18th, measuring over 450 yards is a very stern test to challenge its par of 4. Water is in play all along the left-hand side of the hole with bunkers guarding the right off the tee. Anyone managing to find the fairway then needs to play the perfect 2nd shot with a large undulating green that'll be sure to welcome a 3-putt. These include the par 5s at 6, 9 and 18, and the quite remarkable par 3 at 16. The hilly topography on which the course sits means the course presents a stern test, with plenty of forced carries over steep brush-covered side slopes. Nearly three quarters of the greens are raised above the level of the fairways too, adding yet another challenge for golfers. In addition, the greens present small targets for which to aim at and are well protected by strategic bunkering, demanding accurate and well-judged shots on the approach. However, the Campo America course is made a slightly easier driving course than Campo Asia with its wide, linked fairways and relatively small number of bunkers allowing a more generous margin for error. As a championship course located at the foot of the Mijas Mountains, Campo America’s international status is also enhanced by spectacular views to the Sierra de Ojén and Mediterranean Sea. Campo Asia Golf Course Despite being the oldest of the three La Cala courses, Campo Asia is still well respected by golfers, and for many it is seen as the toughest test at the resort. Its layout is even hillier, the fairways tighter and the bushes more impenetrable than the neighbouring Campo America course, which already offers a sizeable challenge. In this respect, the course certainly puts a premium on accuracy and control. While providing a tougher test off the tees, the course maintains similar elevation changes to that on the hilly America course, with strategic greenside bunkers in place at many of the raised putting surfaces. The four par 5s, with the exception of the 1st, are all reachable in two for longer hitters, but golfers should beware of the concealed contours on the greens and the water that lurks on a couple of the holes. Sometimes less can be more when it comes to the second shots here! The four short holes on the course are between 160 and 185 yards long, with three of them played from elevated tees to greens of terrific variety. This exciting course will guarantee a testing round for golfers of all abilities. Campo Europa Golf Course The Campo Europa course provides an easier game for the average golfer, with generous fairways, flatter terrain and slightly larger greens than Campo America and Asia. However, the presence of excellent bunkering throughout and the appearance of the idyllic Ojen River on eight of the holes ensure that your course management cannot afford to be too relaxed.
