The 5th hole at Pestana Gramacho in the Western Algarve is considered by many to be a hidden gem, and is the perfect showcase for Pestana’s undulating fairways and slick greens. A dramatic driving hole, featuring an uphill fairway and a significant dogleg to the right. Vale da Pinta This course hosted European Seniors Tour Qualifying eight times and is a great golfing challenge for players of all levels. The course is highly playable and intelligent design by Ronald Fream has resulted in a superb experience. Strategic bunkering has been deployed perfectly to protect the course and water hazards add another element of danger for your scorecard. The terrain is an absolute joy on the eye and includes some wonderful trees, including an olive tree that is over 1200 years old! The 13th hole is a real stand-out and a potential card-wrecker. A tight tee-shot requiring the avoidance of a large water hazard and many bunkers leaves a short approach to a very well-protected green. Greenside bunkers await errant wedges. The course places great importance on accurate shot making- tight fairways, doglegs, and many well-placed hazards leave little margin for error. Perhaps the finest example of this can be found on the par 5 4th hole, measuring at 560 yards. The hole certainly provides a stern test of the driver, with a long and accurate drive towards a marker post, made tougher by the out of bounds on the left, and rough on the right. Further caution is required on the approach, with an ever-narrowing fairway and a well-protected, undulating green making for a tough par. Pestana Golf Academy and Driving Range As you would expect from a championship venue, the practice facilities are truly world-class. If you would like to get some tuition in whilst you are on holiday, the PGA professionals at the resort are here for you. Group clinics are also available for those who just want a quick tweak rather than a full analysis of their swing. It is an undulating layout, with hazards being mostly picon (gravel) and walls. There are lots of cacti and the bunkers are excellent and it's certainly a tough test on a windy day. Before going out to enjoy a round, you might borrow a club from the clubhouse to play from the picon otherwise you could ruin your clubs. The South Course is nestled perfectly in the Ria Formosa nature reserve, providing golfers with a great golfing experience, with beautiful views and picturesque settings. A number of holes will test you on this course, with the 8th, 10th and 18th holes certainly deserving of a mention, proving themselves as challenging par 4 holes for even the lowest handicapped players. But the two holes that prove most testing are the 15th and 17th. The 15th is a 218 yard par 3 that requires a lengthy tee shot to carry over a lake onto a well guarded green surrounded by pine trees. The 17th hole is a par 5 that proves to be worth the wait, as a spectacular view with numerous pine trees lining the hole, ensures a fine finish. An accurate tee shot is vital around the dogleg to avoid the rough, possibly setting up an approach shot to the green. There is no room for error on this hole as anything left or right will most definitely leave you in some trouble. It is not surprising that the South course at Quinta do Lago is ranked as one of the best courses in Portugal . North Course €9 million was invested on the North Course in 2014, implementing new innovative technology to ensure that the course was more environmentally friendly and even more aesthetically pleasing. Golfers of all abilities will not only be able to enjoy the challenge of the course but enjoy the visual aspects that the North Course is known for, with wonderful trees, white sanded bunkers and beautiful water hazards featuring throughout. Totalling at 6,529 yards from the Yellows, it is not a particularly long course. Despite this, in terms of quality, you are spoilt for choice. It was named ‘The Best New Golf Course in Europe’ at the World Golf Awards in 2014, and it is evident why. Laranjal Course The land that this course is built on used to be an orange grove and the transformation is nothing short of staggering. Sitting just 2km from the resort in the Ludo Valley, pine and orange trees play a role in the beauty of this course. Voted the best course in Portugal in 2011 this is a challenging track with well-defended greens. The set-up of this course is unique with five par-5s, eight par-4s and five par-3s. Given that this is a standalone course away from the main resort, the Laranjal has its own clubhouse and practice facilities. These amenities are exactly what you would expect from Quinta do Lago and are of the highest quality. The 11th hole on the course is probably the signature hole, although choosing a highlight is difficult here. A 180 yard par-3 with water to the right of the hole as well as the famous ‘beach bunker’ making that tee shot a little tenser. The green is lightning fast and leaving the ball below the hole is a must to give yourself a chance at a single putt. The Faldo Course at the Amendoeria Resort is a pristine championship layout that deservedly won the “Best Course in Portugal” award. This is an incredible accolade considering how many top courses there are nearby. Waste bunkers, large fairway/greenside bunkers and water hazards all play a role in protecting this course. You will find some soft terrain changes and luscious vegetation adding interesting visual aspects to the course too. The Faldo is as much fun to behold as it is to play, it is a very visually pleasing golf course. The 12th hole is one of the most enjoyable holes on the course. It starts strong with a raised tee-shot down over woodland toward exposed boulders in the terraced land. The short par-4 then requires a tee-shot to a raised green perched on the horizon inviting approach shots. The hole is decorated with white sand bunkers and the green is protected by a beautiful cork oak tree. O'Connor Course The undisputed highlight of the O’Connor Course is the designer’s take on Augusta National’s ‘Amen Corner’ – holes 7, 8 and 9 are skirted at various points by a great lake which snakes its way dangerously through three splendid holes. The O'Connor course is the perfect companion to the Faldo course and sits in a wonderful fertile valley. This course is the same length as The Faldo and provides a slightly different golfing experience. The main features of the course are the various water hazards and the mature palm trees dotted around. You will have to contend with both rivers and large ponds so accuracy is key. One of the highlights of the course are the large contoured greens, these will test you. The course starts with a nice-length par-5, always a good chance to get your round off to a good start and there is plenty of room from the tee to let you settle into your round. The final hole on the front-9 is a cracker. A right to left dogleg awaits with water on the left giving you something to avoid from the tee. If this scares you and you bail-out to the right then three small fairway bunkers may gather-up your ball and give you trouble for your second. This is a fairly long par-4 which requires solid golf from start to finish. The water hazard on the left extends the length of the hole and another one awaits approach shots that are over-hit. A testing hole where par is a good score. Academy Course Have you ever played golf under floodlights? If not, now is your chance and it is an opportunity not to miss. This par-3 course is the perfect place to sharpen your scoring skills or to play with beginners in your group. Like the other courses at the Amendoeria Resort, you will walk off this course smiling. The 7th hole features a tee shot over a water hazard. Two teeing options on this hole let you take on the pond or avoid it depending on your skill level. If you don’t have time for a full round or just fancy a bit of practice, this course comes highly recommended. When the dust has settled and you’ve counted up your strokes, the terraces at The Clubhouse give you a great setting to wind down and sip on something refreshing. The lower terrace overlooks the final green so it’s perfect for watching other members of your group finishing their round and putting some pressure on them as they finish.
